Who can practice as an OT?
The short answer: not just anyone. To practice as an OT in Canada, you need to have completed Masters-level studies in occupational therapy. OTs understand the physical, developmental, cognitive, and mental health factors that affect human function. This allows them to look at all the factors that affect each person’s health, ability to do everyday tasks, and maintain a good quality of life. Canadian graduates must pass a national certification examination before they can practice as an OT.
The College of Occupational Therapists
To ensure high standards of care and protect the public, the practice of occupational therapy is regulated in Ontario and most other parts of Canada. Ontario OTs are registered with the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario, which has a list of registered OTs. Only professionals registered with this college can call themselves occupational therapists.
